Life was finally settling down, right?

It’s a new year, Gabe has a permanent-for-now address, and even Keith-the-cat seems to like it there. No more rickety sailboats and living out of go-bags for him. Romance-wise, he and Ranger Man are easing into things. A lifetime of habits are hard to break—for both of them.

Gabe even has a sort of job. Elton’s girlfriend, Althea, asks him to retrieve something that was stolen from her. Easy-peasy, like taking candy from a baby.

Will Gabe regret agreeing to this? Probability is high.

In the midst of the side hustle, Gabe receives a letter via Elton from someone who says they have some of his late mother’s belongings. Gabriel has learned to be suspicious of letters.

Then a young woman shows up on his new doorstep. She claims to be his long-lost daughter and appears to have the documentation to prove it. It’s not impossible, and yet Gabriel is skeptical. Why now? And how did she track him down? Parts of her story don’t add up.

Gabe wasn’t born yesterday, and Heidi Karne was his mother, after all.

The next time Gabe sees the young woman, she’s dead. It will be fine. Everything will be fine.
